  11. <p>Note: Czechoslovakia divided to become The Czech Republic and
  12. Slovakia in January 1993.

  14. <p>   Climate and clothing: The climate is most pleasant during
  15. May-August; smog and dampness prevail in November-March. Bring
  16. rainwear and lightweight or heavy woolens depending on the
  17. season.
  18. </p>
  19. <p>   Customs and currency: US citizens must have visas. Tourist
  20. visas, valid for one entry, usually can be obtained within 2
  21. weeks. Visas require the tourist, upon entry, to purchase 30
  22. West German marks (about $17 at the exchange rate of early 1990)
  23. a day in Czechoslovak crowns. Crowns may not be imported or
  24. exported.

  26. <p>   Health: No unusual health precautions need be taken in
  27. Prague; however, visitors coming from areas where yellow fever
  28. or cholera are endemic must have proper inoculations. Tapwater
  29. is usually safe. Bring any needed medications.

  31. <p>   Telecommunications: Telephone and cab service is adequate.
  32. Czechoslovakia is six standard time zones ahead of eastern
  33. standard time. Because of higher Czechoslovak rates, phone calls
  34. to the United States should be made collect, if possible.
  35. </p>
  36. <p>   Transportation: Czechoslovakia has a wide network of bus,
  37. rail, and air services. Prague has a subway and streetcars, and
  38. trolley buses serve cities and suburbs. Taxis and rental cars
  39. are available. Main roads are adequate.
